This week's #hoodoftheweek is Whittier! We're dropping our alphabetical order, just to keep ya guessing. Whittier is named for the Whittier School, which honored abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier. His legacy lived on, given that this hood has been integrated since the 1890s and played a role in the racial history of Denver. Also known for its stunning Victorian and Queen Anne architecture, Whittier's development was influenced by the 1963 fire, which prompted a switch from constructing wooden structures to brick. Early residents were some of Denver's finest craftsmen and artisans; they contributed to the ornate details of the area's homes and buildings — those on corner lots especially get to show off their beauty! A number of Whittier houses have been designated as Historic Landmark Structures by the City and County of Denver. Whittier's history, central location, and tree-lined streets make this a unique place to call home.
